6 Signs You're A Serial Monogamist

Next! We all know at least one person, maybe even ourselves, who just can’t seem to stay single.

"A serial monogamist is a person who moves from one romantic relationship to another very quickly, spending as little time single as possible. Some serial monogamists might have short-lived relationships, while others might have long-term relationships." (Ferguson, 2021)

Psychologists suggest that serial monogamy may stem from deeper psychological issues including:

  • Abandonment
  • Low self esteem
  • Loneliness
  • Commitment issues.

Some signs of serial monogamy include:

  • Getting bored in committed relationships
  • Seeking constant excitement
  • Experiencing short gaps between relationships
  • Recovering from heartbreak quickly
  • Progressing quickly in relationships
  • Prioritizing new partners over existing needs or relationships

(Travers, 2023, p. 4)

Although there is nothing inherently wrong with relationship hopping, serial monogamy can negatively impact one's quality of life and sense of identity.

If you think your tendency for relationship hopping may be negatively impacting your life, a health professional may be able to help you better understand your dating patterns and motives for a healthier dating future.
